Uniform, Hair and Shoes

Wearing the correct uniform allows children to move freely and helps teachers see their posture, alignment and technique clearly.

It also helps children feel prepared for their lesson and creates a lovely sense of belonging within their class.

We understand that children grow quickly, particularly when they first begin dancing. If you need help with sizing, shoes or finding a more affordable option, please get in touch. We are always happy to help.

This guide explains what your child should wear, how their hair should be styled and the support available if you need help finding the right items.

Check the uniform for your child’s class

Uniform requirements vary depending on the style and level your child attends.

Hair should be tied back securely

This helps teachers see your child’s posture and keeps their hair away from their face while dancing.

Please arrive wearing Tap shoes

If in a Modern & Tap class, please arrive to the studio wearing tap shoes.

Shoes and uniform available to borrow

Our Shoe Borrowing Scheme can help while children are growing or trying a new style.

Uniform
Class Uniform

Children attending Ballet should wear the Ballet uniform listed for their class and level.

This generally includes a pink Ballet leotard, pink tights and pink or nude Ballet shoes. A Ballet skirt is optional for Hwyl a Sbri and Primary Ballet, while fitted black shorts may be worn over the leotard from Grade 1.

Children choosing the boys or alternative Ballet uniform should wear a white top or leotard with black fitted shorts or leggings, white socks and white Ballet shoes.

Children attending Modern, Tap or Commercial should wear their Flame T shirt with black bottoms that allow them to move comfortably.

For Modern, children dance in bare feet. From Grade 1 upwards we also recommend purchasing a pair of half shoes for turning work.

For Tap, children will need suitable Tap shoes. We recommend Bloch Timestep shoes because they provide a good quality sound and are supportive enough for regular lessons.

For Commercial, children should wear clean white trainers that are suitable for dancing and only worn indoors.

Hair

Hair should be secure and away from your child’s face before they enter the studio.

Dance Shoes

Please send children into the studio already wearing their Tap shoes.

Changing into Tap shoes during the lesson can take quite a long time, particularly for younger children. Arriving in them means the class can begin straight away and gives children more time to dance.

Children can bring their other class shoes with them and change into these when needed. Easy to put on shoes are also great for when lessons finish. We try and have as much active class time as possible so the less time needed tying shoe laces is appreciatrd (crocs are fab!)

Please make sure your child’s name is written clearly inside shoes. Tap shoes often look very similar and can easily become mixed up.

Shoes
Shoe Borrowing Scheme

Our Shoe Borrowing Scheme helps families save money as children's feet grow, allowing dancers to borrow ballet and tap shoes rather than buying new pairs every time they need a different size.

How to request shoes

  1. Open your Flame Parent Portal.

  2. Go Uniform in the menu and find the shoe borrowing section.

  3. Select the shoes and size your child needs.

  4. Submit your request.

It will let you know whether we have the size currently available. We'll arrange for the shoes to be handed out at the next lesson, or as soon as a pair becomes available.

Need a different size?

If your child's borrowed shoes become too small, you can request a new size through the Parent Portal. We'll arrange an exchange, subject to availability.

Returning shoes

Please return borrowed shoes when your child outgrows them or no longer needs them, so another dancer can enjoy using them.

Our scheme depends on families returning shoes in good condition, ready for the next dancer.

Second Hand Uniform

We may also have second hand uniform available.

Please get in touch if you are looking for a particular item or size. We will be happy to check what we currently have and help you find the most suitable option.

If the cost of uniform is ever a concern, you are welcome to contact us privately. We never want uniform costs to prevent a child from enjoying their classes.
