Dance program for children aged 2½ - 5

Hwyl a Sbri is the name of our pre-school program for dancers aged 2½ - 5 years old. These classes are the foundations on which their dance journey is built. With children transitioning into our other classes once they turn 6.

This program is unique as it’s a bilingual class. Your child needn’t have any prior knowledge of Welsh or English, but will grow their language skills alongside learning how to dance. This will be done through the use of Welsh and English music as well as teacher interaction.

  • We will introduce your child to the world of dance in a fun, playful and caring environment, nurturing their natural love of movement through structured games and exercises, calling on their imagination and incorporating props.

  • The classes are specifically designed to introduce basic dancing skills in Jazz, Ballet, Modern, Hip hop and Tap and extend beyond dance to develop children's coordination, rhythm skills, language and social skills and musicality.

  • The classes will also encourage independence as parents remain outside of the room for the lesson.

What will your child learn?

  • The choreography is created with the motor skills and movement progression of each age in mind so that your child can develop these skills while also keeping fun, joy, imagination and play at the centre of their experience.

  • They will work towards dance fundamentals such as skipping, hopping, jumping, marching, and galloping.

  • The students are also introduced to music in terms of basic rhythms and timing, which will develop their musicality.

  • The children are taught to follow instructions, take their turn, listen to, and talk in front of their peers, all of which are fantastic building blocks and development for students to begin their school journey.

  • Attending regular classes help children to develop their confidence as they try new things, practice and consolidate existing skills and experience success and mastery all while learning the fundamentals of dance and having fun in a positive and nurturing environment!

Contributing to child development

In each class teachers explore aspects of the curriculum through playful approaches which are responsive to the curiosity and imagination of young dancers. The students respond with active and joyful engagement and participation that enables them to practice and refine the skills and capacities needed for dance. At the same time the students are extended across the various developmental domains of physical, cognitive, language and social development and use learning processes such as attending, remembering and problem solving. Through regular and sustained participation in classes students develop positive dispositions to learning such as enthusiasm, independence, concentration, persistence, co-operation, confidence, coordination, and creativity.

The lesson will be as accessible to both our English and Welsh speaking students. Our approach has been perfected over 5 years of running lessons to classes mostly weighted 60% English /40% Welsh speaking students. We mostly give direction and instructions bilingually, repeating commands in both languages and give praise and encouragement in either language. Individual conversations with students are held in their most dominant language so that they always feel confident and understood while communicating.

The themed narrative of the lessons will introduce children to new dance steps, words and skills and prolonged practice will help them to master these.
